Clearly, these cause so much disruption, you probably won't even be able to read the blog. |
"I think that anything that raises awareness is good."
My school banned these bracelets. At first, I really could not care less. It didn't matter to me; I didn't wear them. I had thought they were a little dirty, kind of offensive, but it didn't bother me if people wore them.
Thanks school. Now I realize, these bracelets are not offensive or vulgar. They are juvenile. Childish. But offensive? It says much about the maturity of our high school that we can't wear something that says "boobies" lest it should impede the educational process. I mean, come on. This is high school. I think we can handle it.
Besides, what is our greatest fear? That maybe some horny teenage boys are wearing them trying to be irreverent and/or funny? Why not take that opportunity to educate them about the statement everyone else sees them making? Isn't that purpose of these bracelets? To raise awareness?
I've heard people complain that the slogan is objectifying women, reducing them down from humans to a body part. Come on. The intent is to save lives through education about prevention and early detection. It is about lives, not boobs.
I polled 8 teachers at my school- and intend to ask more- to see if they thought allowing the bracelets in school would create a disruption to their classrooms. 6 definitively said "no." One of them even admitted that the school's policy requiring them to confiscate the bracelets has created a disturbance, saying that the only time she has had a distraction because of the bracelets she was either taking one away, or once, a student shouted at another who was wearing one, "Oooooh, you aren't supposed to have those at schoooooool!" Let me make my point clear. The problem is the policy.
I think the slogan is very effective at reaching their target audience, the next generation. A mentor of mine told me that if you already have adults down for your cause, and want to get kids in on it too, sometimes, you have to do that with something that maybe the adults don't like as much.
That's exactly what the Keep A Breast foundation is doing.
